Hemangioendothelioma (HE) is the name for a composite group of vascular cancers, which can involve soft tissue, bone, skin, liver, lymph node and/or lung.
Hemangioendotheliomas are of intermediate malignancy (between benign hemangiomas and conventional angiosarcomas). Vascular cancers (ie, cancers pertaining to vessels, particularly blood vessels) are very rare, accounting for only a fraction of 1% of all cancers.
Indolent (lazy, inconsistent) and/or slow tumor growth is common with hemangioendothelioma. Some cases have have been known to go into remission of their own accord, however - some tumors can recur locally and have a destructive behavior.
The word Hemangioendothelioma can be broken down accordingly:
Hem - blood
Angio - blood vessel
Endotheli - the inside surface
Oma - growth
Due to its rarity, it is preferable for patients to seek a sarcoma specialist for the treatment of hemangioendothelioma.
